This week we read the story The Big Blue Ox in our reading text book. Our comprehension skill this week was Setting and Characters. Below are some activities we did with our comprehension skill.
Spelling/Phonics
Our phonics skill this week was the short O sound. We did many activities this week in class and in our reading groups to support our learning of the short o sound. We wrote sentences and illustrated our spelling words, we built our words using letter tiles, we signed our words, we played matching games with our words...etc...
Below is our weekly phonics song. We sang our song and circled all the short o words in the song. We also go to sing using our microphone. I have to say we have some very good singers in our class!

In math this week we learned about place value. Tens and ones place. Some of our activities and stations are pictured below.

Since our computer is connected to the projector in our classroom we are able to view anything on the large screen from the computer. This way we can all see the computer screen on the wall in the front of the room. This made playing the game a lot of fun.
We also listen to many songs as a warm up to our daily math lesson.
A lot of students have asked me how they can listen to the songs at home or on their parents' technology devices. If you can access Youtube, then you can listen to the songs.
Here are a few of our favorite songs so far:
Scoop and Sort: Students scoop out a cup full of items from their bucket. They have to sort their items in groups of ten and then count the bundles of ten, the ones left over and write it down.
Make The Most and Make the Least: This station is used with a tens and ones mat, and a deck of playing cards. Students draw a card, decide where they want to put their card (Tens place or ones place), they are trying ot make the biggest number win or if they are playing the Make the Least Game they are trying to make the smalled number.
Students helped make numbers using tens and ones blocks. I would tell them a number and then they would have to come up and show that number using the blocks. I also showed a number on the board and they had to tell me what number I made. Then we talked about what the number would be if it was ten more or five more, etc...
Students tossed a dice and then tried to make the largest number using tens and ones knowlege.
While the class was working with a partner in their station, I assessed students individually at the back table on task #1 of the Common Core Curriculum Standards. They all did very well. They were given a baggie of peppermints (picture of a peppermint). Their baggie either had 60, 70, 80, or 90 peppermints in it. They had to sort their peppermints correctly (in groups of ten) and then cound the groups. They had to tell me the number of groups, the total number of peppermints, and then cound to 100 starting at the number of peppermints that were in their bag.
